What is Goods and Services Tax (GST)?

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is an indirect tax used in India and other countries on the supply of goods and services. It is a comprehensive, multi-stage, destination-based tax: comprehensive because it has subsumed almost all the indirect taxes (except a few state taxes), multi-staged as it is imposed at every step in the production process, and destination-based since it is collected from the point of consumption rather than the point of origin.

Types of GST in India

CGST

Central Goods and Services Tax: Collected by the Central Government on intra-state supply of goods and services (e.g., transaction within the same state).

SGST / UTGST

State Goods and Services Tax: Collected by the State Government or Union Territory on intra-state supply of goods and services.

IGST

Integrated Goods and Services Tax: Collected by the Central Government for inter-state supply of goods and services (e.g., transaction between two states).

GST Calculation Formulas

1. Adding GST (Forward Calculation):Formula: GST Amount = (Net Price * GST Rate) / 100
Total Price (Gross) = Net Price + GST Amount
2. Removing GST (Reverse Calculation):Formula: Original Price (Net) = Gross Price / (1 + (GST Rate / 100))
GST Amount = Gross Price - Original Price
